01. Riding the Wave
Disaster Readiness for People Who Use Drugs
Riding the Wave is a resource written by Rei Alphonso of Loving Justice Projects,
created to support people who use drugs in the event of natural disasters such as floods and bushfires.
The content draws from peer and community consultations facilitated by Rei,
and provides a comprehensive guide to resilience and survival in times of crisis -
offering practical information, links to useful resources, and thoughts/input from community members.
The design process included collaborative collage sessions, held during community consultations,
where peers were encouraged to express artistically alongside providing thoughts, comments and feedback
for the written content of the resource.
Some of the peer-made artworks were selected to be included in the booklet,
interspersed between pages of practical information and quotes collected during these sessions.
The remainder of the design process consisted of collating all of these elements in a way
that reflected the recursive process of community consultation and feedback,
resulting in a resource where peer contributions were considered, included, highlighted and deeply valued.
